

His peripatetic early years were challenging because he kept leaving friends behind as the family followed his father’s job around the world.

“There was nothing in the fridge,” he says. His father, who had served in both the British and Canadian armies, worked as a diplomat for the Canadian Foreign Service after a stint as a UN peace-keeping observer, but his parents split up when he was 12.īefore he left school at 15, Adams had found himself a job cleaning dishes by night because times were tough. Does he wish they did? “No, but I just feel like there’s something else going on that I’m not a part of.”īoth Adams’ parents emigrated to Canada from Britain before he and his younger brother were born. Surely, though, he must have been surrounded by drugs at times? “I’m astounded still today how I know that there are drugs all around me but no one ever offers them to me,” he says. He doesn’t drink and has never really been interested in alcohol - although he has got drunk (“I’m the best friend you could ever have”) - and says, after a pause, that he hasn’t taken drugs. It’s obvious just looking at him that he’s religious about keeping fit and he swims, bikes and runs. He seems to live an unusually clean life. He is more or less a vegan (although his guilty pleasure is coconut ice-cream) and today he’s avoiding the butter. It’s like skiing down hill - all you can think about is going down the hill,” he says.Īs we talk, Adams, seated at a record label exec’s desk, is making his way through a vegetarian lunch. “Being out there is a great place to be because it’s safe. Most of those he works with he’s known half, if not most of his life he met his guitar player at 16. “Especially if you’re touring America,” he says, “because all the hotels look exactly the same and you live in this little bubble and you’re playing the same set every night.”Īside from the buzz he still gets from being on stage - “When people are singing your songs back to you that’s the biggest payback you could have as a songwriter” - being on the road can be a form of therapy.
